Everyone knows of the ancient Greek soldier who ran 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to tell the assembly of victory — then dramatically fell dead, ensuring we’d forever run long distances in his honor. What people don’t know is that his parched arrival interrupted another epic event: The Great Ball Toss, pitting rivals Sparta and Athens in head-to-head cupping competition. Tragically, their cups were filled with balls, not water, and the soldier died of dehydration, putting a damper on the festivities — and a stop to the contest for 2,500 years.
